How do I take classes online? What do I need?

New technologies like the Internet are changing the way we learn. Many colleges, including Mt. SAC, now offer some courses via the World Wide Web. To get into Mt. SAC's Virtual Classroom, you'll need the following:

bulletBasic computer and Internet skills. Mt. SAC offers some excellent introductory courses through our Computer Information Systems department.
bulletA personal computer capable of connecting to the Internet via
modem, DSL or cable.
bulletAn Internet browser such as Netscape or Microsoft Internet Explorer.
bulletAn email address
bulletWhat do all these terms mean? If you're new to the Net, see the
Internet Information page.

Who can benefit from online learning?

Busy People
And who isn't? Most people are already juggling work, family and leisure...but you can still go to college! With Web classes, you have the advantage of being able to access course materials 24 hours, 7 days a week.
Re-Entry Students
Many people would like to take classes, but they've been out of school for a while. The Virtual Classroom is a great way to re-adjust to college.
Almost Anyone...
...who has access to the Internet and wants to take college classes to meet transfer requirements, upgrade their skills or for personal enrichment.

Isn't classroom instruction "better"?

It depends on your learning style. If you learn best in a traditional classroom environment, Web instruction is probably not for you. But because Distance Learning programs are monitored so carefully, the quality of instruction will be just as good as in our traditional program.

Are online courses accredited?

In a word, yes. Virtual Classroom courses are fully equivalent to the traditional Mt. SAC course. A Web-based class will show on your transcript no differently than any other course taken at Mt. SAC.

What does it cost?

The fee schedule for Web classes is exactly the same as for any other Mt. SAC class ($15/unit as of Fall 1997). In fact, if you live a considerable distance from the campus, you might actually save money by taking a class on the Web.

Where do I get the books?

Textbooks and other materials for Web classes are available at the SAC Book Rac. In addition, several alternative textbook outlets exist in the area around Mt. SAC and Cal Poly.

How do online students take tests?

Some virtual campuses offer online testing. However, security is still a major issue. Until testing in Webspace can be made secure, online students at Mt. SAC will take tests on campus.
